Oregon Deaths Before State-wide Registration.

By Connie Lenzen, CGSM

State-wide registration of Oregon vital statistics began in 1903. There are a few substitutes that can be used for deaths in the 1800s.

For people who died in Portland, the Portland Oregonian newspaper and some Portland city directories published lists of people who died in Portland during some of the 1870s.

The 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 Mortality Schedules listed people who died in the year prior to the June 1st census date.

1878 Portland Deaths - from the 1879 issue of Samuel's Portland City Directory.
